1946 Baruch plan for international control of nuclear weapons fails at UN

1958 U.S.-Soviet nuclear testing moratorium begins

1961 U.S.-Soviet nuclear testing mortatorium ends

1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty signed, bans atmospheric nuclear tests

1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty signed

1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty enters into force

1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty enters into force

1974 Threshold Test Ban Treaty signed, bans nuclear tests above 150 kilotons

1979 SALT II agreement signed, never entered into force

1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty ratified 1991 START I treaty signed

1993 START II treaty signed; START I Treaty enters into force

1995 Non-Proliferation Treaty extended indefinitely, parties pledge to achieve Comprehensive Test Ban no later than 1996.
