SDA Centerfold:
Retrospective on the Nuclear Age

This SDA Centerfold is a retrospective on the fifty years of the nuclear age through photos, graphs, charts, and quotations. (Note: Photos not available to on-line readers. For a free back issue of this newsletter, contact IEER.) From the first nuclear test at Alamagordo, New Mexico and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the thousands of nuclear tests that have been conducted worldwide, nuclear weapons have caused enormous harm to human life and health, as well as environmental devastation. Safeguarding weapons-usable fissile materials and containing the environmental hazards from nuclear waste will remain formidable challenges for generations to come.

On a more positive note, the Centerfold shows the dismantlement of nuclear weapons and the continuing vigilance and activism of citizens around the world who are seeking a nuclear weapons free world. The Centerfold illustrates how individuals around the world have been affected by the age of nuclear weapons, how some have propelled its growth, and how others have tried to come to grips and contain the power and dangers of the atom.
