Bush Energy Plan Will Worsen
U.S. Oil, Nuclear and Electricity Vulnerabilities
Comprehensive Energy Alternative Calls for 100-MPG Cars by 2020,
Nuclear Power Phase Out, Advanced Electricity Distribution System
WHAT: News conference to release Securing the Energy Future of the United States: Oil, Nuclear, and Electricity Vulnerabilities and a post-September 11, 2001 Roadmap for Action. This report compares the increased security vulnerabilities of the Bush Administration's energy plan with a comprehensive alternative emphasizing efficiency and a mix of local and centralized power production. Criteria for evaluating the proposals will be presented.
WHERE: Zenger Room, National Press Club, 13th Floor, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
WHEN: November 28, 2001 at 10 a.m.
WHO:
Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER) and author of the study. Dr. Makhijani was the principal author of the first study ever done on the energy efficiency potential in the United States 30 years ago.
Dr. Brent Blackwelder, president, Friends of the Earth
WHY: The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 focused attention on long-standing vulnerabilities in the U.S. energy system. These vulnerabilities include:
- sudden disruptions of world oil markets and U.S. imports;
- attacks on nuclear reactors or spent fuel pools;
- diversion of plutonium from commercial facilities; and
- damage to centralized electricity grids causing breakdowns in power distribution over wide regions.
The Bush Administration has decided not to revisit its energy plan in light of September 11, even though it would accentuate all these vulnerabilities and introduce new ones. Securing the Energy Future of the United States evaluates the risks of the Bush administration's plan and presents a new, scientifically sound, achievable plan for addressing all these risks.
